29 of the most common spiritual blocks

What’s been your biggest spiritual block lately?

Take a moment to contemplate this question…

No pressure. You don’t need a definitive answer right now. It’s a profound question to integrate though.

This little article will help give you some perspective on spiritual blocks, as well as what most people tend to go through.

First, let’s address a common misconception. Spiritual growth isn’t about gaining anything.

It’s really a letting go of illusion and limitation. When you let go of the limitations, your true essence naturally emerges.

That’s why one of the most important conversations to have (even with yourself) is about your spiritual blocks.

What is blocking you from growing spiritually and being your best self?

Here are some of the most common ones…

External Blocks

Many people believe that circumstances or other people are blocking them spiritually.

Some examples of this are…

  • My relationship
  • Coworkers
  • Men/Women
  • The government
  • The “elite”
  • The news
  • The economy
  • My job
  • My kids
  • My parents
  • Mean people
  • The pandemic
  • Injustice

We’ve all heard people blame this stuff, or even complained about it ourselves.

Although many people will argue that external circumstances, like the examples above, are what’s blocking their spiritual growth, it’s actually not the case.

It’s not the external that blocks us, it’s our RESPONSE to the external.

For example, if you respond to toxic people by getting mad at them or preaching to them, you’ve chosen to let those people block your growth. And the blocks are actually based on your own beliefs and reactions.

As long as you believe the external world dictates your state of being, you make yourself a victim of circumstance. That’s why it’s crucial to take responsibility and look within.

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
– Viktor Frankl (Holocaust survivor)

We can’t change people or circumstances, but we can change how we respond and how we choose to show up. Change happens from the inside out. That’s what leads us to the “real” blocks; the internal ones.

Internal Blocks

If you answered something like “myself” as your biggest spiritual block, you’re on the right track.

You are the only thing in your own way. Remember that.

However, we can get more specific. What aspect of yourself is blocking you? Asking that question can reveal a lot.

Even saying, “my ego” can be general and vague. What part of your ego? What expression of your ego?

Here are the most common internal blocks:

  • Self-worth
  • Laziness and lack of motivation
  • Doubt
  • Past mistakes
  • Past trauma
  • Negative self-talk
  • Letting go of the past
  • Health issues
  • Grief
  • Anger
  • Procrastination
  • Guilt
  • Addiction
  • Being on technology too much
  • Impatience
  • Distractions

Guess what? All of these are in our sphere of influence. We can change them! And changing them creates a ripple effect out into the world.

On top of that, these internal blocks can be dissolved, or at least greatly reduced, by bringing full awareness to them.

In some cases, like with heavy trauma, more work and support might be required. If that feels like you, I recommend checking out Tim Ferriss’ comprehensive list of trauma resources.

Either way, awareness is the first step to positive change with anything.

I know. Dissolving blocks in your awareness sounds too simple, but awareness can be transformative in and of itself. When you see an unhelpful pattern with total loving awareness, it begins to heal in the light of that awareness.

It’s simple, but not easy. Building this kind of awareness takes practice. It can be done by meditating every day and diligently observing your thoughts.

With consistency, you develop greater awareness and strengthen your ability to let go of these blocks.

What If I Don’t Know?

What if you feel like there’s a block, but you don’t quite know what it is?

Here are two questions that will instantly provide you with insight:

  • What things trigger you?
  • What aspect of life do you feel like there’s a gap between where you are and where you want to be?

Simply asking yourself those questions will help illuminate any blocks you may have. Use questions like these to help you navigate your inner world.
