The meaning of the name Prasiolite, comes from two Greek words, 'prason' meaning 'leek', as its color was thought to resemble that plant and 'lithos' from the Greek word meaning 'stones'.

Prasiolite or Green Amethyst is available for sale, even though it is not as common as the Purple Amethyst tumblestones, which are more commonly found than the green stones.

The spelling of its name may also be Praseolite, and both are correct, although the first spelling is more common. Deposits of this stone have been found in Brazil and in the USA.

The purple Amethyst crystals may be naturally transformed into Green Amethyst by the heat within the earth. These days a similar process is done artificially, by heating the stone in kilns.

This transformation can happen through the process of heat naturally within the earth, possibly from volcanic activity.
